The Gallifrey Foundation aimed to raise awareness and support for making ecocide an international crime. Through a multi-faceted omnichannel campaign, engaging influential figures, posting interactive social content and designing live events, we amplified the message, garnered signatories, and built momentum for legal change.

The Gallifrey Foundation faced the challenge of raising awareness and garnering support for the inclusion of ecocide as an international crime in the International Criminal Court. To achieve this goal, they needed to encourage prominent ocean actors to discuss ecocide and secure as many signatories as possible for an open letter, particularly from small ocean states. The Foundation required a comprehensive campaigning strategy to effectively reach and engage their target audience, ensuring the success of their initiative.

Challenge

The Gallifrey Foundation faced the challenge of raising awareness and garnering support for the inclusion of ecocide as an international crime in the International Criminal Court. To achieve this goal, they needed to encourage prominent ocean actors to discuss ecocide and secure as many signatories as possible for an open letter, particularly from small ocean states. The Foundation required a comprehensive campaigning strategy to effectively reach and engage their target audience, ensuring the success of their initiative.

Strategy

To address the challenges, the Gallifrey Foundation, in collaboration with the Ocean for Ecocide Law Network, developed a multi-faceted multichannel campaigning strategy. The campaign focused on leveraging the influence of prominent ocean actors, such as Sylvia Earle, a pioneering oceanographer, campaigner, and author, to raise awareness about the urgent need to make widespread or long-term damage to the ocean an international crime. The strategy included several key events, such as a launch event featuring Sylvia Earle, Climate Week in London, and a targeted campaign aimed at Small Island States in Trinidad and Tobago. By engaging these influential figures and targeting specific events and regions, the Foundation aimed to maximize the impact of their message and secure widespread support for their cause.

Delivery

To implement the strategy, the Gallifrey Foundation and the Ocean for Ecocide Law Network executed a series of well-planned events and targeted campaigns. The launch event featuring Sylvia Earle was a critical component of the campaign, as her expertise and passion for protecting marine ecosystems lent credibility and urgency to the call for making ecocide an international crime. The event was designed to inspire and engage attendees, encouraging them to become advocates for the cause. During Climate Week in London, the Foundation capitalized on the heightened focus on environmental issues to further promote their message and gather support from a wider audience. The targeted campaign aimed at Small Island States in Trinidad and Tobago was crucial, as these nations are particularly vulnerable to the impacts of marine ecosystem damage and their support would be instrumental in pushing for the inclusion of ecocide in the International Criminal Court.

Results

As a result of the omnichannel campaigning strategy, the Gallifrey Foundation and the Ocean for Ecocide Law Network successfully raised awareness and garnered significant support for the inclusion of ecocide as an international crime. The launch event with Sylvia Earle was well-attended and generated substantial media coverage, helping to amplify the message and reach a broader audience. The Foundation's presence at Climate Week in London further solidified their position and attracted additional support from environmentally conscious individuals and organizations.

The targeted campaign in Trinidad and Tobago was particularly effective, with several Small Island States signing the open letter and pledging their support for the initiative. Overall, the campaign generated a strong momentum behind the movement to recognize ecocide as an international crime, putting pressure on the International Criminal Court to take action. The Gallifrey Foundation and the Ocean for Ecocide Law Network's efforts have laid the groundwork for potential legal and policy changes that could have a profound impact on the protection of marine ecosystems worldwide.
